Ok. BYW.

Posted: January 9, 2017 in BYW, Uncategorized

So I made this BYW commitment to 2017. Each day I will Blog, Yoga or Walk. All my listening to podcasts and reading and getting older… I want to do one thing a day that may possibly make me a better in some way – physically, creativity, reflectively and whatever else surfaces.

I have tried to make resolutions in the past but it never worked and I wondered why… I think it cause I didn’t give myself a chance to have an option. For example – There was a hockey game today in Rockford. This meant 3 hours in the car, 2 hours at the rink – boom 5 hours. Tomorrow starts up school again which means I had lots to do to prep, I am also prepping 2 University courses that start the week, so a yoga class would not fit into my day. It was freezing today – forget the walk. But blogging, blogging I could do! So I am taking a small break in my planning and sandwich making to write: to workout my creativity muscle.

When it is Beautiful

Posted: July 5, 2016 in Uncategorized

So, yes, I am supposed to be writing a paper for my final course in my administrative Master’s degree course work.

And yes, shocker, I am outside of a Starbucks writing trying to focus. It is so beautiful out, the weather is perfect, I am in the shade, the music that is embodying my eardrums is remarkable and I feel like I could stay here for hours. If only they had plugs outside – grr.

You know that feeling when the wind is blowing just right so you feel as if you are the most beautiful person on the planet? Yup. That is what is happening right now  and man, it is awesome.

Warriors

Posted: May 26, 2016 in Uncategorized

At the close each year, each school, each project, I try and compose a letter to illustrate or capsulate the time shared. This year… I wrote one for the Warriors with which I have worked at Old Quarry.

“Dear Warriors,

When I typed that word, Warrior, I became Olivia Pope right out of Scandal (a great show, if you haven’t jumped in on it). Now, I am not saying I turned into one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, no. I am saying, I became someone who works with Warriors. Olivia would call you Gladiators, I call you Warriors.

Why does Ms. Pope call her colleagues, Gladiators?  For the same realize, today I call you Warriors – she realizes, her team is not just your average everyday people, they are beyond.

There are 11 Rules to be a Gladiator – Warrior

Rule #11 You know normal is overrated and here at OQ, normal is not an option.

Rules #10 You can ruin a man’s life. Or you can elevate him to his best and here at OQ, that is capacity we have – to elevate our kiddos far beyond.

Rule #9 You can turn a homeless man into a super hacker spy and here at OQ, we all turn normal students into incredible, smart, wonderful adolescents.

Rule #8 The gladiator you save then teaches another protégé to follow his path and here at OQ, the legacy we build in each student will be passed on long after they leave Old Quarry.

Rule #7 Sometimes the work involves digging up dirt and here at OQ, we have to dig deep, real deep sometimes, to get find what makes students’ light bulbs click on.

Rule #6 So you can look pretty and talk pretty as you’re blackmailing someone and here at OQ, sometimes we have to really work at smiling while we are trying to explain to students why they should not stick gum on the carpet.

Rule #5 In every situation, you walk the fine line between being a human and a gladiator and yes, at OQ, we have to balance being human and being a educator and that is not always easy.

Rule #4 You have to stay professional — even with a person who killed your boyfriend and put you close to jail and yes here at OQ, we have to stay professional even after the students …broke our stapler, left used tissue on our floor and when they swarm us and repeat our name 17 times.

Rule #3  Well, when you can spare a tiny bit, it’s reserved for your family of gladiators and here at OQ, our families look forward to having us back after May 27th.

Rule #2 You live on the dark side of the moon, or you work for someone who does and there are only a few things that only OQ teachers can relate to, dare I say rooms with no windows with an odd humming.

Rule #1 You always wear the white hat and look good in it too and yes, here at OQ, we always look good. Always.
Warriors,  you have inspired me each and every day.

Thank you for the 2015 -2016 School Year.

So, if I thought about it, my list of to-dos it a little scary. Particularly since I have two big consulting projects, two classes in which I am a student and two Graduate classes in which I am the educator…

Reminds me of that scene in You Got Mail where Tom Hanks introduces his uncle who is a 6 year old….I digress.

I also am designing two online learning experiences for new classes at a Middle School, getting ready to double my caseload of teachers, a pile of amazing books, an upcoming one of a kind workshop on Saturday and on a team who is hosting a conference at my school. So it seems I could start somewhere, right?

Naw.

I wanted to be back here, writing, experiencing the feelings I spoke about yesterday. Short sentence encouraged me to come back here. People really could not understand the capacity they have to help you be better. They couldn’t, could they?

I mean if we really understood that capacity we had wouldn’t we always work to give that to people? It doesn’t cost anything but a few truthful words, right? I mean some people understand. Otherwise I would not want to be here in my blog as opposed to my list of tasks. Wonderful tasks, ones that are thrilling me beyond belief but they do not give me the feeling of dissolving into myself with those that encourage this feeling.

Maybe now I can work.. maybe I will post again.
